Kentucky Thoroughbred

May 2006

Helen Allen has been in the insurance industry for forty years (she started when she was 10). She began her career in 1966 with Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company in Hodgenville, Kentucky, where she worked as claim secretary to the field adjusters. In 1986, she transferred to the district claims office in Lexington, obtained her adjuster’s license and handled first party and PIP claims for nine counties. She was also called upon to work storm duty during most of the catastrophes that occurred during that period.

In 2000, after thirty-four years with Kentucky Farm Bureau, Helen retired and became an independent adjuster, which she is currently doing on a part-time basis. She has done contract work for Kentucky Farm Bureau as well as for various other companies. She also works part time as the Marketing Rep for Safelite Glass for the Central Kentucky area. I guess the word retired is strictly relative.

Helen has been an active member of the Bluegrass Claims Association since 1989. She has served as Vice President and as Treasurer two years. She has also served on various committees ever since she joined. She has been on the Ky. Claims Association Board of Directors since 2001. She served on the both the Board and as President of the KCA the past two years. She is co-chair of their 2006 KCA Convention.

She is a graduate of Liberty High School and attended Elizabethtown Community College and the University of Kentucky. Helen has attended numerous classes and training seminars during her 40 years in the industry. She obtained her Certificate in General Insurance in 1981 through the Insurance Institute of America. She is a member of the Bluegrass Association of Insurance Women where she has served three terms as President, and as the assistant to the Kentucky Association of Insurance Women’s State Director. She earned her CPIW and is certified to teach ethics and several other courses to the insurance industry. As the current Education Chairman for BGAIW, she has planned numerous NAIW courses this past year and has Rules for the Road scheduled this month. She has attended numerous State, Regional and National meetings. At the National Convention in 1992, she and her sidekick won chocolate Oscars for the best costumes as Mae West and Charlie Chaplin.

Helen has been married to Ted for 45 years and resides in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
They have one son, Kevin, who lives in Georgetown with his wife, Jackie, and their children, Spencer, Maggie and Bailey. She enjoys spending time with her family, gardening and playing golf. She also finds the time to enjoy an occasional insurance women trip with her lady friends for shopping and fellowship and she plays a mean game of Bunko (?). Everybody has heard the tale of Helen and one of her friends being so busy shopping one night that they were in the dressing room when the stores locked it’s doors and they became locked in the mall. Yes, they survived, but even the manager of the Hotel they were staying in heard about it by the next morning.

With BGAIW hosting the 2011 Conference, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of Helen in the next few years………. And that’s a very good thing.

Helen has also agreed to teach a two hour continuing education seminar on “Insurance Fraud and How to Prevent It” at the KSAIW May education meeting this year.

Thank you, Helen for all that you do……..

KSAIW is extremely proud to call you a.....
